Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System at HTUF 2012

HTUF, also known as High-Efficiency Truck User Forum, held their annual national conference and expo on September 18 – 20 in Charlotte, NC.

Terex was one among many different exhibitors at the expo. At our booth (#417), we had team members meeting customers, explaining how our hybrid system works and providing comprehensive literature. One of our many features allows you to monitor and troubleshoot our HyPower System with our remote software package.

In the ride-and-drive, We showcased our Terex Hi-Ranger HRX55 over-center material handling aerial device featuring our patented HyPower Hybrid System.

Thanks to everyone that had a chance to stop by the booth. News is spreading about the benefits of the Terex® HyPower™ hybrid system, but people have questions and want to see proof. No problem. We hit the road capture video of a couple competitors’ units that have been retrofitted with our HyPower hybrid system and contacted owners and operators to get their feedback.

The video footage and customer feedback was fantastic. The video features both an Altec® and a Versalift® unit retrofitted to utilize our hybrid system. The video shows both units in action with the hybrid system running while customers talk about the benefits they’ve experienced like:

Terex Utilities Offers Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System Retrofit Program

Terex Utilities now offers customers the option to retrofit their current utility truck fleet with the Terex HyPower Hybrid System, a plug-in Power Take-Off (PTO) system that uses stored energy from the system’s rechargeable batteries to power the non-propulsion functions of most utility vehicles.
The system helps customers save fuel and reduce exhaust emissions while allowing operators to function in a relatively quiet work environment, a benefit for noise sensitive job sites.
“Retrofitting our HyPower™ system onto a current utility truck, including aerial devices and digger derricks, can help customers ‘green up’ their fleet at a reduced capital investment versus purchasing a new HyPower™ unit,” says Nick Cammisa, Terex national accounts manager. “Not only is this a less expensive option, but it’s also a faster way for customers to meet their company’s green initiatives. The HyPower™ system reduces the engine idle hours on the job site, resulting in fewer oil changes, lower fuel consumption, as well as reducing the amount of times an engine will need to go into re-gen mode. Most competitive aerial device makes and models qualify for this retrofit option.”
The Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid Retrofit Program can be applied to any Terex or competitive manufacturer’s aerial devices five years old or newer and can be completed at any one of our 14 different Terex Equipment Services (TES) locations. For an aerial device to be considered for a HyPower™ retrofit, it needs to pass an initial inspection, which includes an understanding of the truck’s available payload capacity, body configuration and cab-to-axle length to accommodate the battery packs. After the inspection, retrofits can be completed in as little as two weeks.
HyPower™ retrofitted trucks come with the standard one-year warranty from the date of in-service on the system, the same as on new HyPower™ equipped units.
“Not only is the Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System simple enough to be retrofitted onto existing utility vehicles,” says Cammisa, “but it is also durable enough to outlive its first vehicle and be used on another.”

NTEA—Work Truck Show 2012 in Review

Were you one of the more than 10,000 people in the truck equipment industry that descended into Indianapolis, IN to see over 500,000 sq. ft. of exhibitions on March 6th – March 8th? If you were, then I hope you had an opportunity to check out the Terex booth. If you weren’t, let’s fill you in on what you missed out on at the booth.
I know, in our last blog post, we had you scratching your head and asking yourself what could we bring to this year’s show? On Tuesday, March 6, everyone found out, it was our Terex® Hi-Ranger™ SCM55 Unit featuring the Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System.
The Terex® HyPower™ system, a former Green Truck Award winner at the show, hogged the spotlight again and was the center of attention. The SCM unit was, by far, the largest “green” aerial device there! At the booth, Nick Cammisa and Dan Brenden, our technical experts, answered questions about the SCM55 unit and the Terex® HyPower™ system, and were supported by Dennis DePazza and Terry VanConant. Bill Kugler from our Terex Equipment Services group in Birmingham, AL was also at the booth to discuss the various services our service centers can provide for utility truck owners and operators.
This show is becoming more popular with the utility fleet managers due to the wide variety of equipment available to view. This creates a great atmosphere for the NTEA’s Work Truck Show attendees and exhibitors. Terex Utilities plans to continue exhibiting at this show annually.

CITY OF LONGMONT, COLORADO, ADDS TEREX® HYPOWER™ TRUCKS TO EQUIPMENT FLEET

The proud men of Longmont Power & Communications take a moment for a photo op in front of their newly purchased Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid Digger Derrick. Terex Utilities has sold four trucks equipped with its HyPower™ Hybrid System — a Terex Commander C4047 digger derrick, a Terex Hi-Ranger TCX55 bucket truck, and two competitive bucket trucks retrofitted with the HyPower™ system — to the City of Longmont, Colo. The Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System is designed to allow city operators to save fuel, reduce noise, and increase efficiency, plus it has been optimized for the utility industry.
According to Deborah Cameron, customer services and marketing manager for Longmont Power & Communications (LPC), “We are constantly looking at the emerging technologies like the Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid System to see what would be a good fit for Longmont. “LPC crews have really responded well to these new trucks.” Terex® HyPower™ trucks offer quiet, yet powerful operation. “Our crews like that they do not have to yell over engine noise for material or direction with the Terex trucks,” says Cameron. “They also appreciate that there is no reduction in the performance of the controls while the trucks are in hybrid mode.”
The service area that LPC covers is compact so city crews do not have long drives to worksites which, according to Cameron, made the Terex® HyPower™ system, with its separate batteries, a smart choice. One of the retrofitted bucket trucks serves as a service truck, taking care of outages and daily calls. The other is the city’s street light truck, repairing lights throughout the system. The TCX55 bucket truck is primarily used by the City’s maintenance crew. According to Cameron, the city has just received the C4047 digger derrick and is in the process of incorporating it into its fleet.
To purchase the Terex® HyPower™ Hybrid trucks, the City of Longmont received $70,000 through the Regional Air Quality Council to offset the expense for these trucks. According to Cameron, the City will evaluate opportunities to add more Terex® HyPower™ trucks to its fleet in the future as other units come due for replacement.

6 Benefits of the Terex HyPower Hybrid

Fuel Savings - The HyPower™ system can save up to 1.2 gallons of fuel per hour of work. This adds up to thousands of gallons over its lifetime.
Reduced Noise – Traditional Utility Trucks are very noisy while they’re working. Since the HyPower™ system reduces or eliminates the need for the vehicle to idle on the jobsite it greatly reduces noise. This is good for the Utility Workers and for anyone living nearby.
Decreased Maintenance – Since the vehicle’s engine doesn’t have to operate to power job site work it runs up to 65% less. This reduced operating time means that repairs and maintenance of the engine decrease greatly.
Increased In Service Time – By reducing the fuel used by the vehicle our system reduces the number of times the vehicle has to be refueled. How much more time would a crew have if they refueled 400 fewer times.
Retrofits – The HyPower™ system was designed to be simple and reliable. Because it doesn’t interfere with the drive train it’s easily retrofitted on most chassis and for almost all Terex Utility models.
No Limitations – Most other Hybrids force you to compromise on the chassis, drivetrain, working space, towing capacity or operating time. HyPower™ system has none of these limits allowing you to work as you always have.
